Pilot Short Term Disability

Loss of Medical License benefits paid weekly.

What is Short Term Disability (STD)?

According to the Council for Disability Awareness, “over 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before they retire.” For pilots, FAA oversight can increase the time a pilot is out of work and without pay.
During illness or injury, we want you to be able to focus on recuperation, not how to pay your bills. This Short Term Disability plan was created for pilots who would like short term disability coverage during the first 6 months of disability before benefits are payable on the HW Long Term Disability Loss of License plans.

Key Points:

  • 3 optional waiting periods: 14 day, 30 day, and 60 day
  • Choose a waiting period after your sick bank ends
  • Longer waiting periods have lower premiums
  • You can request at a later date to lengthen your waiting period but to shorten it, you must show evidence of insurability (health exam)
  • Plan does not require you to exhaust your sick bank

Monthly Benefit amounts available up to $6,500 or 2/3’s of reported earnings. Plan states benefit and premium are based on earnings reported by airman, not actual earnings.
