Understanding Your Benefits After a Qualifying Disabling Event:

A pilot who experiences a Qualifying Disabling Event as defined in paragraph 10.D.4. may utilize accrued ESB hours as either a bridge in anticipation of long-term disability (LTD) payments and/or a “plus-up” to their LTD monthly payments. Note that Harvey Watt will only be involved in the medical approval of requests for bridge to LTD.

  1. Initial Use: After a Qualifying Disabling Event, a pilot may use ESB hours during the period, if any, between the exhaustion of their sick leave and sixty (60) days post-event. There is no requirement for LTD approval to utilize this option.
  2. Supplementing LTD Payments: Once a pilot begins receiving LTD payments, they may elect to receive an additional fifteen (15) ESB hours per month while on LTD until their ESB bank is exhausted, with a maximum limit of twelve months per event.
  3. Documentation and Eligibility: To access ESB, appropriate medical documentation from a qualified healthcare professional is required. However, a pilot is not obligated to file or qualify for LTD to use their ESB under the guidelines of paragraph 10.D.3.a., though an approved LTD application will qualify a pilot for ESB use.
  4. ESB Limitations: A pilot may not use ESB for the first fifteen (15) hours missed due to illness after calling in sick. Furthermore, pilots are not mandated to use accrued sick leave before tapping into their ESB.
  5. Maximum ESB Usage: The maximum amount of ESB allowed per Qualifying Disabling Event is 180 hours.

Important Note: ESB hours are treated as pay without credit towards duty hours.
