Short Term Disability
Dear Omni Crewmembers:
According to the Council for Disability Awareness, “over 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before they retire.” For pilots, FAA oversight can increase the time a pilot is out of work and without pay.
During illness or injury, Pilots should focus on recuperation, not on how to pay your bills. A healthy sick bank and Long-Term Disability coverage can help, but the average Omni pilot will remain without a source of income replacement after their sick bank runs out (average 14 days- a little under one month pay) and before long-term disability benefits begin (90 days – after approximately three months).
This is where Short-Term Disability can help.
Key Points
- The average Omni pilot has 14 days in his/her Sick Bank. Omni Long- Term Disability coverage does not begin until 90 days of disability. Every month we hear from the pilots who have an income gap of up to three months between these two benefits
- Harvey Watt’s plan includes Loss of License coverage that protects pilots when they cannot exercise their medical certificates. Other Teamster airlines with coverage through Harvey Watt have overwhelmingly positive feedback.
- Because this is a group plan, it offers significant benefits over individual plans, including lower premiums and no required physical examinations. Enrollment is optional, but we strongly encourage our members to take advantage of this plan.
Plan Features
- FAA Loss of Medical License coverage
- Pays 60% of earnings tax free, up to a maximum of $1,500 per week.
- Benefits begin after a 7,14, of 30-day waiting period (your choice), and continue until you are covered by the LTD plan.
- Benefits and premiums are based on the earnings that you report on your application, not actual earnings. You can change earnings by contacting Harvey Watt at pilot@harveywatt.com
- Policyholders receive unlimited FAA Medical Certification Services to assist in all levels of FAA Medical issues from a small medication question to having us present pilot’s cases to the FAA Cardiac Review Board for recertification. These are confidential and voluntary services overseen by Medical Directors, Dr. Tilton and Dr. Berry former US Federal Air Surgeons.
